This is such a decorative piece. It is carved from wood and, as the images show, is a cantering horse, painted white. It is supported on a metal stand, and the saddle terminates in the head of a hunting hawklooking backwards over the tail of real horse hair.
It is surprisingly dramatic and a real eye-catcher. It is solid wood, and weighs accordingly. It is constructed in sections. Age has led to some visible cracks between some of these.
I don't know, but I suspect it originates from the Middle East: where Arab horses, especially greys, and hunting with hawks are a popular passtime. Perhaps he was once a feature in a palace or hotel out there.
He is about 1.1m long and stands almost 1.2 from the floor to the tops of his ears.
