Mid-19thC comb-back windsor chair in ash and elm

SOLD

This is a really lovely low comb-back windsor chair.
It’s signed on the back “SH” and has a relatively unusual and very attractive motif in the back splat. It’s a good Thames Valley chair and the turning on the leg dates it to 1835-1870 and that points to a West Wycombe maker Samuel Haws whose dates are right, although there are other SH candidates including Samuel Harris although he’s a little later (I’m indebted to The English Regional Chair, by Bernard Cotton).

Its a beautiful, comfortable and capacious chair in excellent condition. It doesn’t wobble or creak and has lovely wear with good colour.
It is as good to look at as it is to sit in.
